Whilst the large multinational device companies have global sales and marketing organisations, they do not usually invest heavily in internal, early stage, R&D. Instead they tend to grow their product portfolio by licensing and acquisition of "near market" opportunities. MDi has recognised the significant potential for the early phase development of medical device innovations leading to profitable commercial partnership with these companies. Furthermore, when compared with pharmaceuticals, medical device development involves much shorter timescales and has lower regulatory hurdles; the evaluation of market opportunities and assessment of technical feasibility is also more straightforward, thereby reducing financial risk and making this an attractive target area.
